Here at Play Pouch Australia we love kids, and we love a foundation who do great work to support kids who might not have as easy a path as others. When we heard about the Pyjama Foundation we were so impressed by the work that they do – helping to change the educational future of children in the foster care system. A massive team, under the direction of founder Bronwyn Sheehan, are changing the direction of the life path of these Australian kids.
The Pyjama Foundation trains committed volunteers from the community to mentor a foster child. The volunteers meet with the children weekly to read, tutor and implement educational play, while offering a safe and trusted friendship. The program was initially based on the impact of a simple activity that most take for granted - having books read to them. The program has now expanded into numeracy, life skills, socialization and life mentoring. The volunteers deliver a specifically designed literacy and numeracy model which encapsulates the theory of making learning fun. The program broadens the child’s support networks and provides relief and support for the children’s foster carers.
The Pyjama Foundation is providing an effective community approach to teaching and protecting vulnerable and disadvantaged children. This approach is to facilitate not just provide educational support, but the nurturing of a meaningful relationship.
